森のなか
行けども行けども尽きせぬ森。そんな深い森に入ったことはないが、入ってみたいなと切に思う。
入るのは、むろん、一人でなければならぬ。森にわけいる喜びの一つは、人間くささや人間らしさから離れていくことにあるのだから。森の奥へとどこまでも入っていきたいと思うのは、その一歩一歩が人間世界とのつながりを消しさってくれるからだ。森の奥には、行ったものにしかわからぬ異界があるのだと思う。
異界は、森閑としている。まわりにはだれもいなくて、静まりかえったなかに、わたしが一人ポツンといる。深い森にわけいった経験のないわたしだが、少年期、故郷の山をかけめぐっていて、ふと気づくと、だれもいない森閑に身を置いていた。そういう経験は何回かある。住みなれた生活空間から切り離され、親しい人びとからも切り離されて、見なれぬ木々と草むらのなかに一人いる浮遊感。自分の頼りなさに身のちぢむ思いがする一方、そこから別の世界が開けてくる、その入口に立っているような、ドキドキする感じがたしかにあった。
高校時代に「森閑」という文字に心惹かれたのも、少年期の山中での経験がこの文字を見てあざやかによみがえったからだった。「シンカン」というおとの響きが快い。
一本の木の形を紙の上に写したのが、漢字の「木」。その木がたくさん集まって生えている場所をあらわすのが「木」を二つ横に並べた「林」。それにもう一つ「木」を加えたのが、「森」。三つの漢字が、どれも左右対称の安定した形をなすのがうれしい。
訓読みでは「キ」、「ハヤシ」、「モリ」。平地にすくっと一本立つのが「キ」、たくさんの木がにぎやかに立ちならぶのが、「ハヤシ」、もっとたくさんの木が陽光をさえぎって、ほのぐらい空間が奥深く広がるのが「モリ」。
音としても文字としても、何百回、何千回と接してきた三つの単語について、わたしのうちには右のような三つ一組のイメージができあがっている。
森は、深く、ほのぐらい。木々はこんもりと。あるいは、鬱蒼と茂る。空気はひんやりと冷たい。湿気を帯びた地面には苔が生え、下草が群生する。わけいれば、ありのまま自然に近づき、世事は遠のく。人為に対立するものとして自然をとらえれば、森こそは自然がもっとも純粋に生きている空間だといえよう。
自然への崇拝と畏敬の念が強かった時代に、森が神の住処と考えられたのは、思えば、当然のことだ。人事を超えた、もっと大きなものがそこにあると感じられたにちがいないのだから。一人で森のあるとき、わたしを包む森閑の世界は、わたしの小ささと森の大きさを強く印象づける。小さい自分を小さいなりに受けいれられる気がするのは、わたしを包む森の深さとゆたかさのゆえだ。その深さとゆたかさを、昔の人は神と名づけたのかもしれない。
世事から遠い森のなかの人には、失敗も成功もない。勝利も敗北もない。自然とは、あるがままそこにあるもの、－失敗や成功、勝利や敗北とは無縁の世界なのだから。
森のなかにわけいることは、そういう世界に還っていくことであり、自分の体と心を自然らしい自然でもって満たすこころみのように思える。
