キノコ最前線 鳥の仏教
どこで読んだのか分からなくなってしまったのですが、毒キノコっていっても人間にとって毒なだけで、虫や鳥が食べても大丈夫な場合があるって、それは胞子を遠くに飛ばして欲しいから、きのこたちは翼のない人間には食べさせないようにしてるらしいって知ってから、翼のある生き物に非常に憧れを抱くようになりました、そしたら素敵な鳥の本に出逢いました。 著者はきのことも関係の深い中沢新一さんです。
ネパールのボードナートという町の小さなお寺で、わたしがチベット仏教を学びはじめた頃、チベット語の個人教師となってくれた若い僧侶が、仏教をまなびはじめるのに役に立つ、読んでも楽しい本として手渡してくれたのが、この本でした。自分もこの本で楽しみながら仏教の基礎を学んだので、君もこの本を読んでみるといいと言いながら、この本を手渡してくれたときのその若い僧侶の表情を忘れることができません。
そのとき、その若い僧侶はこうも言いました。「いまに君がチベット語がよくできるようになって、仏教のことも深く理解するようになったら、この本を日本語に訳して、お国の仏教徒たちに読ませてあげるといい。この本を世界中人たちが読むようになれば、世界はいまよりももっとよくなるにちがいないから」。その言葉に感動してうなずいていたわたしは、いまようやくそのときの約束を果たすことができました。『鳥の仏教』は小さなかわいらしい本ですが、人類にとってはまるで「すばらしい花環」のように貴重な、精神文化の遺産です。
人間にはたしかに翼はないのですが、鳥のように風を感じることや、想像力という翼をもつことなら可能だって本気で思います。
