キノコ最前線 今日の毎日新聞の一面に
「うつくしやあらうつくしや毒きのこ」。信州出身の俳人・小林一茶が毒キノコのあやしい美をいくつも詠んでいたのを飯沢耕太郎さんの「きのこ文学大全」（平凡社出版）で教わった。「人をとる茸はたしてうつくしき」「化されな茸も紅を付て出た」
くれぐれも化かされぬよう用心の要るキノコ狩りだが、少し前に関西の山林でカエンタケという毒キノコが急増中というニュースを見かけた。火災を思わせる真っ赤な棒状のキノコで、枯木の根元などに生育するが、その猛毒ぶりがすごい。
３グラムも食べれば死ぬといわれ、専門家によると全身真っ赤になる炎症を起こす。触れただけで皮膚がただれる。見るからに毒々しいが、食用のベニギナタタケと間違えられたことがあった。新潟県や山形県などで中毒例があり死者も出た。
専門家が注目するのはカエンタケの発見例がミズナラやコナラが集団枯死する「ナラ枯れ」の発生地域に多いことだ。米粒ほどの甲虫が伝播する病原菌で起こるこのナラ枯れ、本州日本海側から各地へ急拡大する防除困難な森林被害である。
この話で頭に浮かぶのは宮崎駿監督のアニメ「風の谷のナウシカ」で有毒の瘴気を出す菌類と怪虫の森「腐海」だ。腐海は文明に汚染された土地に生じた人間を拒む生態系である。が、それは実は土地の毒を浄化する役を果たしていたのだ。
ナラ枯れ拡大の原因のひとつは人が薪炭を利用しなくなり、森の老木を放置するようになったからという。また温暖化の影響だという見方もある。文明のもたらす枯死の後に生える毒キノコは人に何を語りかけるのか。「天狗茸立けり魔所の入口に」。これも一茶だ。
