奇病日記
空を見上げると真っ黒な雲は早送りみたく流れていた。
違和感を覚えつつ思い切ってドアを開けるとそのきのこさんは、マスター寒かったでしょう？ごめんなさいと言った。私は断念してあっさり帰ってきたことをどう説明しようか考えていたところだったので内心その対応にほっとしていた。するとそのきのこさんは芝居ががった口調でこう言った。私がこの世界の隙間を探していること、’それ’を持って帰ってきたことを’それ’が気づいたらしい、とんでもないことをしてしまったんだと言い終わらないうちにカウンターに突っ伏してしまった。呆気にとられているとムクっと顔を上げ、私がコーヒーを入れてあげると言い、私の様子をいつも観察しているのか、それらしい淹れ方でコーヒーを注いだ、そのきのこさんの淹れたデタラメなコーヒーは意外にもおいしかった。
ふと私は’それ’をなぜか連想させる「隙間の時間」について話してみることにした。私が話終えるとそのきのこさんは「隙間の時間」と何度も繰り返した。しばらくして私も「隙間の時間」って呼んでいいと言った。
そのきのこさんは「隙間の時間」と嬉しそうに発音し、隙間の時間にだけこの世界は本当の本当の姿を見せてくれるのと言った。だから私たちは隙間の時間を探してしまうのと付け足した。
外は白い雪で覆われていた。雪の中を帰っていくそのきのこさんを見送り店を閉めた。小さな記憶は埋もれてしまうだけのことで、なくなってしまうわけではないのだと考えるようになっていた、全ての姿を見せてはくれないきのこに出逢ってからそんなことを考えるようにもなっていた。そのきのこさんの足跡にも雪は降り続きまわりと見分けがつかなくなっていた。
雪はいつもより明るくていつもより静かな夜をつれてきていた。
その日を境に、そのきのこさんが店を再び訪れるということはなかった。
